This March I will be participating in the mont
h-long Slice of Life Challenge. Each day I will be posting a ‘slice’ from my life. This year I am using Natalie Goldberg’s book Old Friend from Far Away: The Practice of Writing Memoir to provide my sparks for memoir writing. Each post will be a quick write using one of Natalie’s exercises.
We all come from someplace. Where do you come from? How did you escape? Go for ten.
This seems a variation on Where I’m From poem, but with an escape hatch built in ..
🙂
Kevin
Yeah, it was interesting her prompt included an escape plan-assuming we all escaped from someplace rather than evolving from someplace.
I was thinking the same thing! I kept being reminded of that poem as I read. 🙂
This post has me thinking of my own past and escape. The book has had such interesting prompts, I may have to get it for the #next100daysofnotebooking
The prompts are helping me so much with the practice of remembering. I love it.
I love this- what a lot has influenced you! It was interesting to learn more about you. I also LOVE that this was straight from your notebook- I have thought of doing that too!
Writing by hand has been very different than typing with this writing. I love it.
I loved the honesty in this post. In many ways we came from similar places. I will have to keep this as an idea…loving it!
I love the line “where change wasn’t welcomed with a wagon.” Good for you for finding change! Also, I definitely want this book now!
It’s so good with the practice of remembering!
The writing you produced from this prompt reminds me of the beginnings of a “Where I’m From” (a la George Ella Lyon) poem.
For sure.
Wow! You were an adventurer, Paula. I love your description of your hometown as well as the way you enbedded the story of where you settled. Today, I definitely have to buy this book by Natalie Goldberg.
Somedays I still can’t believe I made that move -a total leap of faith.
What a brave move you made, and aren’t you so glad you did?!? I have yet to use the prompts from this book although I have them for a back-up!
