#SOL20: Day 4 “Coffee!”

Screen Shot 2019-03-02 at 5.28.56 PMThis March I will be participating in the montOld Friend from Far Awayh-long Slice of Life Challenge. Each day I will be posting a ‘slice’ from my life. This year I am using Natalie Goldberg’s book Old Friend from Far Away: The Practice of Writing Memoir to provide my sparks for memoir writing. Each post will be a quick write using one of Natalie’s exercises.

Today’s spark from Natalie: “Tell me about how you drink coffee. When? Where?…A whole world exists in coffee. Glean those details…Go. Ten minutes.” Here is my ten minute slice.

Do you drink coffee? Tea? Hot cocoa?  What’s your ritual. What details do you think of?

  1. Oh this speaks to my overly-caffeinated soul! I have such a storied past with my coffee ritual stemming back to 3rd grade drinking coffee with my Nana before school! I think a new slice is brewing-thanks for the inspiration!!

  2. I have to comment as I drink my morning cup. I heat up the milk and froth it before adding my coffee from a Kurig machine. Even the sound of the brewing wakes me up. I usually drink my first cup while reading emails which is how I got to your post. I’m not doing the challenge this year and feel somewhat lost, but I’m enjoying reading yours and others that come directly to my inbox.

    1. ooh frothy milk sounds heavenly. I still have fond memories of Cafe du Mond from many, many years ago-and that beignet still makes my mouth water! I’ll miss your slices, Margaret, but look forward to any poetry or writing you will be sharing in the future.

  3. Wow – we have MANY rituals in common – as I sit sitting with dog in my lap and fire roaring! It is a ritual for sure. I might need to post about my mugs … mug choice each day is an important ritual for me. Thanks for sharing.

  4. YES! Coffee is a requirement for waking up and is often paired with reading blogs or emails depending on whether it is a month of slicing! Thanks for the pictures your slice generated!

  5. Yes, coffee it is. Sometimes it comes from the local gas station and other times Dunkin Donuts or at home.

  6. Yes, there’s nothing quite like a cup of coffee, even the thought can keep one going! I sometimes enjoy my afternoon one more than my morning one which can be a bit rushed. Your slice perfectly creates the bliss of coffee!

  8. Not much better than coffee and fur babies. Oddly enough, even in the dead of winter, I am an iced coffee drinker. I do enjoy a nice warm cup of tea though. Chai is my fave! Not bad on a weekend morning sipping while in the hot tub 🙂

  9. I usually take my weekday coffee to go so weekend coffee is my luxury as well. Love the idea of this post and have a few ideas brewing (pun intended) thanks to your slice.
